The Astros Cheating Scandal: How It Affected Their Reputation and Performance in 2023

Published

on

The Houston Astros had long been one of the premier teams in Major League Baseball (MLB) until they were exposed for engaging in an illegal sign-stealing scheme during their 2017 World Series championship season and part of 2018. This scandal engulfed baseball, as it severely dented their reputation and legacy; MLB issued severe sanctions, there was public backlash, lawsuits from former players and opponents were filed, while their performance and morale took an immediate hit heading into 2023 season when trying to cope with its aftermath and pressures.

Investigation and Punishments in Major League Baseball (MLB)

The Astros cheating scandal was first revealed by The Athletic in November 2019 via testimony provided by former Astros pitcher Mike Fiers and other sources. According to this report, they used a camera system to record signs from opposing catchers that they relayed directly to their batters using banging on trash cans or other means. MLB promptly conducted its investigation, confirmed all allegations, and issued its findings by January 2020.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred issued the maximum $5 million fine against the Astros, as well as stripping them of their first- and second-round draft picks in 2020 and 2021. Additionally, Manfred suspended General Manager Jeff Luhnow and Manager A.J Hinch for all of 2020 season and banned them from involvement with baseball – prompting their immediate termination by the Astros shortly after Manfred announced this penalty. MLB also implicated former bench coach Alex Cora and player Carlos Beltran as managers hired by other teams; both parted ways before ever managing one game began before Manfred’s announcement imposed maximum fine and sanction.

MLB chose not to sanction any Astros players for their behavior; they were given immunity in return for cooperating. However, Manfred publicly criticized them for failing to demonstrate any sense of regret or accountability; he stated that their judgment will ultimately come from both their peers and society at large.

Backlash and Lawsuits

The Houston Astros cheating scandal caused widespread outrage from fans, media, and rival teams who believed that their punishment was too lenient and that their 2017 title was won without legitimate means. Fans at every road game heckled and booed them; protests took place with angry signs from angry supporters; some also brought inflatable trash cans or banged real ones against their stadium – to mock the Astros; while players also received death threats or received disrespectful messages on social media.

The Astros also faced several lawsuits from former players and opponents alleging that their cheating had an adverse impact on their careers and earnings. Former Blue Jays pitcher Mike Bolsinger brought suit against them for unfair business practices, negligence and intentional interference with contractual and economic relations; claiming that the Astros ruined his career by stealing his signs and hitting him hard during a game in 2017. Former MLB pitcher Trevor Bauer accused them of using illegal substances to enhance pitcher spin rates; demanding an investigation from MLB.

Performance and Morale are of utmost importance when it comes to workplace success and morale

The Astros cheating scandal had a detrimental impact on their performance and morale during the 2023 season as they attempted to move past it and prove themselves on the field. They hired Dusty Baker as manager, James Click as general manager, hoping that this move would restore some stability and credibility into their organization; and most core players such as Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, Carlos Correa, Yordan Alvarez who played on their 2017 championship team were retained as players on this roster.

However, throughout the season the team was faced with multiple difficulties and challenges, including injuries, slumps and controversies. Furthermore, they faced constant criticism from fans and media alike as well as hostility from rival teams; additionally they also lost trust from several of their supporters and sponsors who felt betrayed and disappointed by some of their actions.

The team ended their 2018 campaign with an 81-81 record and did not qualify for playoffs for the first time since 2016. Their offensive production suffered, as their runs scored and home run totals decreased; earned run average was 19th out of 20, strikeouts 22nd out of 19, saves 22nd. Their pitching staff also struggled resulting in 16th earned run average 19 strikeouts 22 saves respectively and Altuve hit only.256 with 15 homers and 62 RBIs while Bregman hit only.241 with 18 homers and 59 RBIs respectively.

The Astros cheating scandal was one of the biggest and most damaging in MLB history, severely damaging their team reputation and performance in 2023. MLB issued severe sanctions, while fans and media criticized them, as well as former players and opponents filing lawsuits against them for cheating. Coping with its consequences and pressure was difficult and they missed playoffs for the first time since 2009 as their future remains unclear as they attempt to rebuild their image and return competitiveness in MLB.

Patrick Mahomes: The Quarterback Who Changed the Game

Published

on

By

Patrick Mahomes is not simply a quarterback; he’s an extraordinary phenomenon, an extraordinary magician and an exceptional game-changer. As the face of the Kansas City Chiefs and youngest and richest MVP ever in NFL history (winning two Super Bowl MVP awards before turning 30!), Patrick Mahomes changed the game forever.

The Phenom

Patrick Mahomes was born September 17th 1995 in Tyler Texas to Pat Mahomes (a former Major League Baseball pitcher), and Randi Martin (former basketball player). Patrick inherited both his athletic genes and passion for sports from both of his parents – playing baseball, basketball, and football all throughout high school and excelling in all three. At Whitehouse High School in Tyler he became one of their stars on all three sports – throwing for over 4,600 yards and 50 touchdowns as a senior to earn Texas Associated Press Sports Editors Player of the Year recognition; also average 19 points per game during basketball play before being selected by Detroit Tigers as one of their 37th round MLB draft pick.

Mahomes decided to follow his passion and enroll at Texas Tech University. He redshirted as a freshman before becoming the starter as a sophomore, throwing for 4,653 yards and 36 touchdowns while also showing his dual-threat ability by rushing for 456 yards and 10 scores; earning himself recognition with both the Sammy Baugh Trophy winner award as well as second team All-Big 12 selection status.

Mahomes had one of the most prolific junior years in college football history during his third season. He led all Division I FBS players in passing yards (5,052), passing touchdowns (41) and total yards (5,337) while also notching 53 total touchdowns.

He delivered some impressive performances, such as throwing for 734 yards and five touchdowns, while also rushing 85 yards and two scores during a 66-59 loss to Oklahoma, tying the NCAA single-game passing yards record. Later he would throw 586 yards and six touchdowns while also running 85 yards with two scores in 54-35 win against Baylor; receiving second team All-American honors by the Associated Press as well as finalist nominations for Manning Award and Davey O’Brien Awards for these performances.

The Magician

Mahomes made his decision after his junior season to forego his senior year and enter the 2017 NFL draft instead. He was widely expected to be one of the top quarterbacks selected – alongside Deshaun Watson and Mitchell Trubisky. Mahomes impressed scouts and analysts alike with his arm strength, mobility, creativity and competitiveness; drawing comparisons to Brett Favre who served as his idol while Alex Smith became his mentor.

Mahomes was selected with the 10th overall selection in the 2017 NFL draft after Kansas City Chiefs traded up from 27th spot and acquired him through trade. Trubisky went to Chicago Bears with second pick. Mahomes signed a four-year, $16.4 million contract with Kansas City, joining an established quarterback Alex Smith and head coach Andy Reid as teammates and learning his way around NFL football as his rookie year progressed – he only played once during this first year, the season finale against Denver Broncos where he threw for 284 yards against Denver when leading Kansas City to victory with 27-24 victory!

Mahomes took over after the Chiefs traded Smith to Washington Redskins. He enjoyed an extraordinary season, throwing for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns against only 12 interceptions; becoming just the second player after Peyton Manning to do this in one season; also becoming first ever NFL player ever to throw over 5,000 yards both during college play as well as NFL play! Consequently, leading them to an 11-4 record and AFC West title victory!

He led the league in passing touchdowns, yards per attempt and passer rating and was honored with numerous honors, such as Pro Bowl selection, first team All Pro selection, NFL MVP (becoming youngest winner since Dan Marino’s victory in 1984) as well as Offensive Player of the Year and Bert Bell Awards. Widely admired for his spectacular plays such as no-look passes, left-handed throws and sidearm slings he earned the moniker “Showtime”, “Magician”, or “Gunslinger”.

Mahomes led the Chiefs back into AFC Championship Game play after nearly 25 years and faced off against New England Patriots for first time since 1993, throwing for 295 yards with three touchdowns but also having two interceptions. He led Kansas City’s fourth-quarter comeback which forced overtime; however, they never received possession in overtime due to winning coin toss & scoring first drive touchdown resulting in loss 37-31 without Mahomes ever reaching Super Bowl 50 appearance.

Mahomes continued his impressive play in 2019, despite missing two games due to knee injury. He threw for 4,031 yards and 26 touchdowns with just five interceptions for 12-4 record and AFC West title win. Mahomes led the league in completion percentage (69%) as well as having an incredible passer rating (105.3). Mahomes earned Pro Bowl honors, second team All Pro designation, as well as being selected fourth on NFL Top 100 Players 2020 list as chosen by peers.

Mahomes led the Chiefs to three consecutive comeback wins, and made their first Super Bowl appearance since 50 years. He threw for 321 yards and five touchdowns while running 53 yards – helping the Chiefs overcome a 24-0 deficit against Houston Texans 51-31 in the divisional round. In the AFC Championship Game, he amassed 294 yards and three touchdown passes while also running 53 yards to score one of Kansas City’s five touchdowns to overcome an early 10-0 deficit and defeat Tennessee Titans 35-24. In Super Bowl LIV, Mahomes amassed 286 passing yards and two touchdowns while running 29 yards for another score as Kansas City rallied from a 20-10 deficit and scored 21 unanswered points to defeat San Francisco 49ers 31-20. As such, he was named Super Bowl MVP, making history by becoming both black quarterback and youngest recipient ever of such honor. Furthermore, this made him the first NFL player ever to capture both titles before turning 25 years old.

The Game-Changer

Mahomes was an unprecedented game-changer in 2020. He signed an unprecedented 10-year, $450 million contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs – at that time the largest in sports history. Additionally, he became part-owner of his MLB team’s Kansas City Royals, as well as more active on social issues including racial justice, voting rights and COVID-19 relief; joined other players in demanding that NFL recognize and support Black Lives Matter movement while supporting players’ right to protest; donated $100,000 to local charities while helping register voters in Kansas City; finally being named Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of Year alongside teammates Travis Kelce and other athletes using their platforms for change by Sports Illustrated magazine.

Mahomes was dominant on the field this season, throwing for 4,740 yards and 38 touchdowns while only throwing six interceptions – helping lead the Chiefs to 14-2 record and an AFC West title for fifth straight year. Mahomes led all quarterbacks in yards per game with 488 and had an incredible passer rating of 108.5; as well as being selected to both Pro Bowl and All-Pro teams; additionally being nominated as NFL MVP award finalist alongside Aaron Rodgers (which eventually went to Aaron Rodgers) while finishing 4th on NFL Top 100 Players list (voted on by peers).

Mahomes led the Chiefs back into the Super Bowl for a second straight time in 2018, where they met up with Tampa Bay Buccaneers led by six-time Super Bowl Champion Tom Brady. While Mahomes did throw for 270 yards with two interceptions thrown his way and three sacks while being hit 10 times total he also experienced turf toe injury that limited mobility; attempted some miraculous plays but several receivers dropped passes during a 31-9 loss with Mahomes going without scoring his first touchdown of his career; his worst performance and greatest loss.

Mahomes rebounded well after his Super Bowl loss, having his best season yet in 2021. He amassed 5,614 passing yards and 52 touchdowns with only 8 interceptions thrown his way – breaking Peyton Manning’s previous NFL record for most passing yards in one season, as well as becoming the first player ever to achieve that milestone twice in their career.

Aaron Rodgers: The Comeback Story of the Year

Published

on

By

Aaron Rodgers is an icon in the NFL. A four-time MVP and Super Bowl Champion, he is widely considered one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. But he’s also an incredible fighter – having overcame obstacles throughout his career, including one devastating Achilles injury in 2023 that threatened to end both season and career if it hadn’t already. Yet somehow, Rodgers managed to overcome it all and lead New York Jets into playoffs by refusing to give in and staging an unbelievable comeback against odds – read this story of Aaron Rodgers defiance and amazing comeback!

The Injury

It was Week 6 of the 2023 NFL season and the Jets were set to face off with Miami Dolphins at MetLife Stadium. Aaron Rodgers had already had an outstanding year leading in passing yards, touchdowns, and passer rating. Additionally, after being traded from Green Bay Packers earlier in the off-season he quickly developed strong relationships with receivers such as rookie sensation Ja’Marr Chase as well as revitalizing their offense with ease.

At 17-17 in the third quarter, Rodgers was in the midst of dropping back for another pass when disaster struck. A sharp pain shot through his left leg before collapsing onto the ground clutching his ankle in pain – immediately realizing something had gone terribly wrong; having ruptured his Achilles tendon – one of the most severe injuries for any athlete and particularly so at 40-years old quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

He was immediately carted off of the field, taken to hospital, and diagnosed as needing surgery that would keep him out for at least six months of action. With no guarantees as to his future (some wondered whether he would play again, while some even questioned why he chose a team which hadn’t made playoffs since 2010), his season ended immediately with little certainty about its continuation or whether retirement would follow; many wondered if ever play again or retire; many even questioned why he left Packers to join Jets when both teams had had missed playoff appearances since 2010.

Rodgers was devastated but determined. He pledged to come back stronger than ever and disprove all those who doubted him, including surgery and his rehabilitation process. Working alongside trainers, doctors, teammates and his own physical therapist he underwent physical therapy, nutrition and mental exercises alongside watching film studies of playbooks to stay in contact with coaches and teammates as he focused on returning before season’s end and leading his Jets into playoff contention. He set a goal: Return before year end & Lead your Jets!

The Comeback

Rodgers’ recovery was truly impressive. He steadily made progress and exceeded every milestone ahead of schedule and expectation, impressing doctors, trainers, coaches and fans while inspiring teammates, fans, peers and his own recovery process with incredible determination, resilience and courage.

He received support from family, friends and colleagues. Former teammates such as Davante Adams, Matt LaFleur and Brett Favre sent messages of encouragement while rivals Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes and Russell Wilson showed admiration as did idol Kobe Bryant who also experienced an Achilles injury but made a successful comeback.

Rodgers’ hard work paid off. By Week 15 he was cleared to practice and rejoin his team, being welcomed with cheers, applause, and an overwhelming sense of gratitude from all his teammates and the cheering crowd – it truly felt like coming full circle – he felt a surge of emotion while returning as well as relief he would soon rejoin them all on the field! He was ready for action!

He practiced for two weeks without showing any sign of discomfort or rustiness, appearing sharp, confident, and comfortable in his practices. He impressed his coaches and earned their trust, convincing them he was ready for competition and could help the team win.

In Week 17 he got his chance. The Jets were 9-6, needing a win against Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots to secure playoff qualification. Rodgers was named starter, making his return to the field to warm welcomes from both fans and Belichick himself; and feeling an immediate rush of adrenaline and anticipation that it was game time again and ready to make an impressionful statement that they wanted him back with them in every way possible. He was back and hungry.

He played like an untouchable. He threw for 347 yards and four touchdowns without an interception on 28 of 35 passes for a passer rating of 149.3. Chase scored two times while Davis and Crowder each got one touchdown catch from him; additionally he ran 36 yards himself for scoring on a 12-yard scramble! This success propelled the Jets to their first playoff berth since 2013! He celebrated with his teammates, hugged coaches, smiled widely at victory, then raised his fist triumphantly as they celebrated with one another before lifting it high at victory!

The Legacy

Aaron Rodgers’ comeback was one of the most remarkable feats in NFL history. Defying all odds and recovering from a career-threatening injury, he returned to play at an elite level – leading his team into playoff contention and giving them hope of competing for a championship. Proving critics wrong and shutting up doubters; Rodgers cemented his legacy while further building up his reputation.

Aaron Rodgers’ comeback was one of the most inspiring tales in sports history. He demonstrated what it meant to be a champion and leader; what it took to overcome adversity and achieve greatness; as well as what it means to live life with passion and purpose – becoming Aaron Rodgers, an inspirational comeback tale.
