Notorious Melbourne gangland figure Tony Mokbel hospitalized with chest pains

Tony Mokbel, a notorious Melbourne gangland leader, was taken to the hospital for chest pains.

Mokbel, who is known for having cardiac problems, was taken to hospital Thursday evening following experiencing chest pains at Barwon Prison near Geelong. The Herald Sun reported.

This follows a 2012 heart attack and a 2019 hospitalization after he was repeatedly stabbed by two fellow inmates. He then entered cardiac arrest.

He suffered a severe attack that left him with a fractured skull and brain hemorhaging.

Mokbel was convicted in 2007 for gangland-related crimes in Melbourne. Police claim that he was responsible for the city’s amphetamines trade.

He was linked to Carl Williams, a slain underworld figure. He was also charged with but not convicted for two murders during the Melbourne gangland conflict.

Mokbel vanished from Melbourne during a trial in March 2006. He was extradited to Australia in July 2007 to face the charges.

He was convicted for drug trafficking, and is currently serving a sentence.

Mokbel appealed his convictions in the Lawyer X scandal involving Nicola Gobbo (an ex-melbourne lawyer) who was a registered police informer.
