Gerrie Coetzee was actually Gerhardus Christian Coetzee. He was a well-known South African professional fighter who competed between 1974 and 1986.

Gerrie Coetzee is also known as “The Boksburg Bomber”. From 1983 to 1984, he was a WBA heavyweight champion.

His boxing career began on September 14, 1974 when he defeated 19 veteran fighters and fellow South African Christians. He lost the title to Greg Page in 1984. His best work earned him a lot of respect.

Gerrie Coetzee was a long-standing professional boxer. He is known as the “Boksburg Bomber” and fought many world champions during the 1980s.

Gerrie Coetzee was a Cape Town native. He was raised in Johannesburg, a working-class area. He became a professional boxer after completing high school. In 1974, he had his first professional bout.

He defeated Mike Schutte 12 rounds in 1977. He lost his next three fights, and then was defeated in 12 rounds by Mike Schutte. Coetzee, however, earned a positive reputation in the post Ali heavyweight division.

He lost the WBA heavyweight title in 1984 to Greg Page. However, his title run was short-lived. He sustained a variety of injuries during his career and needed three surgeries.

Coetzee, despite his difficulties, was an outspoken opponent to Apartheid. He was actually one of few black South African fighters to have an audience beyond his country.

In 2003, he was awarded a Bronze Order of Ikhamanga by the President of South Africa. He earned the respect of many people, black and white, throughout his career.
