Canadian actor George R. Robertson died on January 29 at the age of 89 after a long and distinguished career on stage, screen and television. He had 80 film and TV credits to his name, and is best known for playing police chief Henry Hurst in six Police Academy films.

The first Police Academy movie was released in 1984 and was a major success. It was followed by five sequels in 1985 and 1989 and even a spin-off series.

During his time on the show, Robertson became a household name and was seen in small roles in Airport, Rosemary’s Baby and Norma Rae. He also appeared in the 2003 film The Reagans, where he played Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater, and 2006 ABC miniseries The Path to 9/11.

After his acting career, he went into humanitarian work. He was a UNICEF ambassador, speaking to high school kids across Canada and helping raise money for an orphanage in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

He won the Danny Kaye UNICEF Canada Award in 1990, and was a recipient of the Gemini Humanitarian Award in 2004. He also walked the length of southwest France to raise money for an orphanage. Several of his movies earned nominations for the Academy Awards. He also portrayed Admiral Leahy in 1995’s Hiroshima and Senator Fulbright in 2003’s The Pentagon Papers. He had a devoted family and was surrounded by them when he died.
