Who Was David Duckham?

He was born in Coventry (Warwickshire), England on 28 June 1946. He was an English Rugby union player. From 1969 to 1976, he played 36 games for England. In 1969, he was partnered by John Spencer against Ireland. He graduated from King Henry and Coundon Infant and Junior Schools.

David Duckham, Former Lion and England back, who scored the first ‘Dai in the world’ at age 76, has passed away. For his contributions to rugby, he was awarded an MBE. His autobiography, “Dai for England”, was a bestseller.

Dai Duckham was born in Coventry, 1951. He began his professional career at Coventry Rugby. He was the most dynamic player to ever wear the blue-and-white jersey. He was actually the only English player in the Barbarians’ famous back line that beat New Zealand fifty years ago.

He worked as a banker and builder, in addition to his club career. He was also the director of marketing at the Bloxham School, and the honorary president for the Wooden Spoon.

He played 36 games for the Irish Lions and 11 for the British Lions during his playing career. His most memorable performance was the 1971 Lions trip to New Zealand where he was a key player in the team’s success.

His career was not without its lows and highs. He was the only English player in the legendary Barbarians’ backline and the only Englishman to take part in the 1973 Test match against New Zealand. His last appearance was in 1976 against Scotland when he was hurt.

Dai Duckham was a master at counter-attack. He was a strong leader and a natural leader. He was particularly skilled at moving out of the frame to the right and getting on the ball.
