Albrecht Gero Muth is partly inspired by true events. The murder of a 91-year-old German-born socialite in Washington D.C. was the basis for the film.
While the story is partially fictionalized, it’s not hard to imagine the real life events. David Auburn (a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, for his play “Proof”), turned the facts into dark comedy.
Muth was a conman who made his entire existence around creating false narratives. He coerced influential and wealthy people to pay him. He claimed to be an Iraqi Army soldier and boasted that he had political connections. The Iraqi government refuted this claim.
Muth tried to find a way out of a deep void within his heart by marrying a sham woman. He was a codependent and often appeared content to just coast on charades.
Muth was accused of living a long life as a domestic abuser, according to the prosecution. Muth’s lawyer stated that Muth is mentally unwell and could not stand trial. Judge ruled that Muth was a competent witness, so he did not have to be there.
Muth was convicted of first-degree murder. However, the sentence for Muth was reduced to 50 years from 30. Judge Canan stated, “The evidence against Muth is overwhelming.”
Michael Muth, during his trial was extremely malnourished. He made grandiose assertions that frustrated his lawyers. He had clear motives, attorneys said.
Based on true events, ‘Muth’ movie
‘The Life of Muthu’ is a film that adapted a true story from playwright David Auburn. German-born fraudster can effortlessly fool the best of us.
The film is partially fictionalized and features a starring role from Vanessa Redgrave. However, the true story is captivating and touched many.
One of the conspirators is a German-born con artist who bought a fake military certificate from a local store to pretend he was an Iraqi brigadier General. His contacts in D.C. learned that he was embedded with an Iraqi military unit, and had strong ties to Middle East figures.
Muth got invited to parties at high-powered events where he could network. Former Vice President Dick Cheney introduced him to Muth.
Drath worked as a journalist, socialite, and author. Muth and Drath got married in 1990. However, their relationship was unstable due to Muth’s violent temper.
In 2002, Muth moved in with a gay lover. He threatened to kill him and he was granted a temporary restraining order. And just a few years later, Muth was arrested for assaulting his wife in drunken rage.
The movie tries to explain the complicated story of Muth’s life. This movie tells of Muth’s attempts to avoid being charged with murder. However, it doesn’t give much detail on how he killed his wife.
