Who Was Alan Rankine?

Alan Rankine, a Scottish musician/record producer, was mentioned previously. He was well-known as the keyboardist and guitarist for the well-known rock band, The Associates. He and Billy Mackenzie, the group’s lead singer, co-founded it in the late 1970s.

The Associates was a Scottish post-punk group that emerged in the late 1970s. Recording an unauthorised cover of David Bowie’s Boys Keep Swinginging gained them a lot of popularity. The duo signed to Fiction Records, and received airplay on John Peel’s radio show.

Although Rankine was forced to leave the group in 1982 due to health issues, he continued his work as a producer. He worked during this time with The Cocteau Twins’, Anna Domino, The Pale Fountains, and Paul Haig.

Later, he was appointed as a lecturer at Stow College. He helped students to create the Electric Honey record label. It launched the careers of Snow Patrol, Belle & Sebastian and Biffy Clyro.
